Convert ASS / SSA to SRT
Anime and fansub releases often ship Advanced SubStation Alpha files that TVs and phones cannot read. Turn them into SRT while skipping typeset signs and songs.
Handy for anime releases with typeset signs and karaoke.

How to use the ASS to SRT Converter
- Drop an .ass or .ssa file (or paste its text). Extracting subtitles from an MKV? Save the track as .ass first with MKVToolNix or a similar tool.
- In Ignore these styles enter the style names you do not want, for example
Signs, Songs, OP, ED. Style names are case-insensitive and found in the [V4+ Styles] section. - Tick Merge lines with identical timing when the same moment is split over two lines, and Keep top/bottom position if you want {\an8} codes preserved for players that support them.
- Convert, review the preview and download the .srt.
What happens to ASS features
| ASS feature | Result in SRT |
|---|---|
Italic / bold / underline overrides ({\i1}, {\b1}, {\u1}) | Converted to <i>, <b>, <u> |
Hard line break \N | Real line break |
| Position, move, clip, fade, blur, rotation | Removed |
Karaoke (\k, \kf) | Removed; only the text remains |
Vector drawings (\p1) | Whole line skipped |
Comment: lines | Ignored |
Colours and fonts defined in styles cannot be represented in standard SRT, so they are not carried over.
Skipping signs, songs and effects
Fansubs typeset on-screen text — shop signs, texts on phones, opening and ending lyrics — as separate lines in their own styles. In SRT these show up as odd, badly timed lines at the top of the screen. Entering the style names removes them in one go. Not sure what the styles are called? Open the .ass file in a text editor and read the names in the Style: lines, or look at the style column in the converter’s preview.
Overlapping dialogue and ordering
ASS lets lines overlap and does not need them to be in time order, because every line is positioned independently. SRT players show only text in order, so the converter sorts by start time. If two speakers talk at once, you can keep both lines as separate cues (they overlap) or merge identical timings. Run Check SRT afterwards to find overlaps that some TVs cannot display.
Tips for the best result
- Use the encoding fixer first if the ASS file shows wrong characters.
- If the file contains several languages in different styles, list the unwanted language styles under “ignore”.
- Need the styling for a later re-encode? Keep the original .ass and use the SRT only for devices that cannot handle it.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with SSA (the older format)?
Yes. SSA and ASS share the same structure for dialogue lines, and both are converted.
Can I keep the colours?
No — SRT has no standard for colours in all players, and ASS colours come from styles. Basic <font color> tags are not generated.
Why are some lines missing?
Lines that only contain drawing commands, lines in ignored styles and Comment: lines are skipped on purpose. The preview reports how many lines were skipped.
What does “Keep top/bottom position” do?
Lines that were set to the top of the screen get an {\an8} prefix, which VLC, mpv and many other players understand. Players that do not may show the code literally, so leave it off if you are unsure.
Can I convert SRT back to ASS?
Yes, with the SRT to ASS converter, where you choose font, size and colours.
Are files uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
